It’s a historic whitewash to Australia because of the devastating bowling performance by Herath who took 13 wickets in the match. Herath’s performance was excellent throughout the three match test series. The left armer took 28 wickets in the series and named as man of the series. Throughout the series Australian batsmen were failed to pick his deliveries. Australia who was defeated by only once in the test history by Sri Lanka in past 26 test matches lost three consecutive test matches in the series. With this defeat Australia also lost its no 1 test match rankings in ICC table. It was a 33 years long wait for Sri Lanka to win a test match series against Australia.
Sri Lanka won the toss in the final test and choose to bat scoring 355 runs. Chandimal and de Silva both scored centuries. They scored 132 and 129 respectively thus giving Sri Lanka a decent total on the board. MA Starc once again took 5 wickets in the innings for 63 runs. He took 24 wickets in the series and became the only bowler in the history to take 20 or more wickets with minimum ever strike rate. Lyon took 3 wickets.
Australia in reply scored 379 runs in 125.1 overs. SE Marsh score 130 runs for Australia with the help of 19 fours. He faced 281 balls. SPD Smith also scored 119 runs with the help of 10 fours and 1 six. MR Marsh scored 53 runs. For Sri Lanka it was Herath once again who took 6 for 81.
Sri Lanka in their second innings once again posted a good total on the score board. They declared the inning on 347 for 8 wickets. JK Silva scored 115 runs. DM de Silva scored 65 runs not out. Sri Lanka gave a target of 324 runs to Australia for victory. Australia only managed to score 160 runs. Warner scored 68 runs. Once warner got out there were no other batsmen from Australia who stayed on the wicket. Whole of the team got out in just 44.1 overs. Herath bowled a brilliant spell of spin bowling taking 7 wickets for 64 runs in 18.1 overs. Australia lost the match by 163 runs and also lost the series for the first time in history of 33 years from Sri Lanka.
It was Australia’s worst ever batting performance in a series against any country in past 100 years. Australian batsmen scored with an average of 19.86 throughout the test series which was just not enough. Herath was named both the man of the match and the man of the series for taking 28 wickets in the series.
The test series defeat costs Australia no 1 position in ICC rankings. The ranking table is very interesting now. Pakistan now holds the top position with India on the second place. Australia dropped to third position. All eyes are now on final test match between West Indies vs India which will decide the final shape of the table.
